This book, the Bhaktimàrga, is “The Book of The Path”. The word “bhaktimàrga” is a Sanskrit word, a dead language of India and means “The Path of Devotion”. The Path is a spirituality, a practice, a means of accomplishing the purpose of life. Like all spiritual practices from a long tradition, The Path has a “sadhana”, the agya. The word sadhana is also Sanskrit and means: “What to do”. It refers to all the practices and precepts of a spiritual path (màrga). A practitioner of The Path finds his teaching in books such as “The Song of the Awakened” (Bhagavad-gītā), “Dao-De-Jing”, “The Gospel of Jesus”, “Yogasûtra”, for example.

The first chapters of the Bhaktimàrga are verses that came to the editor’s mind after a “nirvikalpa-samadhi”, or “ecstasy”. The last chapter, the fourth, entitled: “The Agya of the Angas” is the set of moral recommendations that are the fourth pillar of the Agya (sadhana). The four pillars are meditation, service, satsang and angas.

For those who have not received the “Revelation” and who do not practice the four pillars of the agya, the similarity between the teachings of The Path and those of the books mentioned above is doubtless not obvious, yet the kinship is obvious, especially on the versions of these texts rewritten without the usual errors and artificial additions. Their reading leaves no doubt as to the perfect identity of these different teachings, beyond the particular languages and historical contexts of each country.

Specialists in spiritualities of Indian origin know the “trimàrga”, or “Path to liberation” and its various components, jnana, karma and bhakti-yoga. These same specialists do not know The Path. The Path is little known by this name in the West.

If I told you that The Path is raja-yoga (or asthanga-yoga), you would say to yourself, “I know raja-yoga !” , but this yoga, as it is practiced and taught today, has nothing to do with the practice (Observance) of The Path. The meditation techniques and the angas, the service, the satsang are not those of the yogas I have just told you about. The word “The Path”, in ancient Chinese was said “Tao” and yet The Path is not Taoist, even if we recognize Lao-Tzu as a former awakened master of The Path and the Dao-De-Jing, as a book of The Path.

If the name “The Path”, is recent in this form, we find traces of his practice on iconography and pottery dating from five thousand years before our era, found in archaeological excavations of the banks of the Indus, in present-day Pakistan. For some archaeologists, the traces found would prove, at most, that at that time, in this civilization, a form of meditation was practiced. For an insider of The Path, the postures and symbols surrounding the found artifacts say, without a shadow of a doubt, that in this civilization of the Indus, one practiced “The Path”.

Some spiritualities and Indian or Chinese religions, are what remains of The Path, once the carriers of the message have disappeared. When the living word is silent, men transform its message as the years go by. As the transmission is often done by word of mouth, as for the teachings of Gautama (the historical Buddha), you can imagine the distortions of the original message!
